Academician Chung-Liang Tang passed away in the United States on May 31, 2022. He was 88 years old.

Dr. Tang was a renowned scientist in applied physics. He has taught at Cornell University since 1964 and became Spencer T. Olin Professor of Engineering in 1985. Dr. Tang was devoted to developing optical materials for the generation and detection of electromagnetic radiation, from the infrared to the ultraviolet. While his research primarily utilized lasers, he also developed new electro-optical devices, materials, and original processes for his research.

Dr. Tang obtained his doctorate degree at Harvard University in 1960 followed by post-doctorate studies at the Technical University in Aachen, Germany. Later, Dr. Tang served as research staff member, principal research scientist, and consultant at Raytheon Company, and had also served on the advisory board for the NTT Basic Research Laboratory in Japan. During his distinguished career, Dr. Tang was elected as Fellow of IEEE and received the Charles H. Townes Award from the Optical Society of America. Dr. Tang was elected Academia Sinica Academician in 1994.
