Previously postponed due to the pandemic, the biennual Academia Sinica Academic Administrative Strategy Meeting has resumed this year (2022). Aimed at enhancing understanding among Academia Sinica units and introducing the construction progress of the AS South Campus (ASSC), the 2022 Strategic Planning Meeting (also known as the Shalun Meeting) took place at the end of March at ASSC at Shalun, Tainan. During the meeting, Directors from all 24 Institutes and 8 Research Centers shared their missions and prospects of each Institute and Research Center, joined by researcher representatives as well as Academia Sinica Administrative Directors. Over the span of two days, almost a hundred AS members came together, sparking inspiration for research collaboration and getting to know each other better. Attendees expressed that through the witty exchanges among colleagues during the enthusiastic meeting discussions and the relaxed evening banquet, they were delighted to experience a different Academia Sinica.

President James Liao said that in the 2019 Strategic Planning Meeting at Yangmingshan (also known as the Tsaoshan Meeting), three objectives were established: Achieve global peaks of excellence; Fulfil social responsibilities in crucial areas; and Attract and cultivate top talent. As an extension of Tsaoshan Meeting, President Liao stressed that the Shalun Meeting was aimed at team building and strategy deliberation across Institutes and Research Centers. The goal was for attendees to gain an understanding of each other’s development goals and resources through sharing actions taken to reach the Three Objectives and periodic achievements.

In this Meeting, the Director of each Institute or Research Center gave six-minute presentations, which were met with enthusiastic discussion and feedback that opened opportunities for interdisciplinary collaboration. In the General Discussion on the second day, lively discussion covered topics including creating talent recruitment opportunities, enhancing accommodation quality for international research staff and students, and improving the cafeteria at Academia Sinica. Through a bottom-up approach, Academia Sinica hopes to listen to voices at Institutes and Research Centers, gather ideas, and facilitate mutual understanding.
