Russia’s invasion of Ukraine has caused numerous Ukrainian citizens to leave their homes and suspend their studies. In order to provide meaningful support for Ukraine, Academia Sinica launched the Taiwan Scholarships for Ukrainian Students and Scholars program on March 16, 2022 in order to assist Ukrainian scholars and students who wish to visit AS for research or internships. This program provides roundtrip flight tickets, accommodation, plus a living allowance for up to three months, and may be extended should the need arise.

According to President James Liao, AS has already accepted twelve students, and will provide them immediate assistance with visas and other relevant arrangements. Three of these students arrived in Taiwan on April 17, and the rest will be arriving by the end of May.

President Liao expressed his firm conviction that “During wartime, no one stand aloof”. As a member of the international scientific community, Academia Sinica issued a statement on March 2 calling for the worldwide community to do its utmost in supporting Ukrainian scholars and students. AS has also taken the initiative in working with the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Science and the Technology Division of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Czech Republic to develop subsidy programs for Ukrainian undergraduate and graduate students, as well as scholars with doctoral degrees.

Academia Sinica’s new Scholarship program for Ukrainian students supports research in the humanities and social sciences, mathematics and engineering sciences, and life sciences, providing monthly living allowances of NT$15,000 for undergraduate students, NT$20,000 for graduate students, and at least NT$66,950 for scholars with doctoral degrees. As of April 14, 165 students and 42 scholars had applied to this program.

According to the AS Department of International Affairs, due to the large number of applications received from Ukrainian students, Academia Sinica has been working with the Ministry of Education since April to enhance resources for Taiwan’s humanitarian aid. Available funding from MOE and domestic universities has been used to launch the Taiwan Scholarships for Ukrainian Students and Scholars application platform, which will provide more scholarship opportunities. We hope that Taiwan’s warmth and caring will provide much-needed assistance for Ukrainian scholars and students during these trying times.
