Academician Yuan-Shih Chow passed away in China on March 3, 2022. He was 98 years old.

Dr. Chow was a world-renowned mathematician and statistician with outstanding academic achievements in probability theory, including martingale theory, optimal stopping theory, and sequential analysis. Dr. Chow studied under renowned probabilist Joseph Doob. After receiving his Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign in 1958, Dr. Chow has served at IBM, University of California, Berkeley, Purdue University, and Columbia University from 1968 to 1993, as Professor Emeritus.

Dr. Chow has also contributed significantly to academic development at Academia Sinica. In 1970, Dr. Chow returned to Taiwan to serve as the Director of the Institute of Mathematics. During his tenure, he promoted probability and statistics theory and shouldered the mission of expanding and revolutionizing mathematic education in Taiwan. With the help of several Academicians, Dr. Chow founded the Institute of Information Science in 1974 and the Institute of Statistical Science in 1980. Dr. Chow received numerous honors, including election as an IMS Fellow and ISI Elected Member.

Dr. Chow was elected Academia Sinica Academician in 1974.
