Academician Sheng-Hsien Lin passed away in the United States on November 15, 2021. He was 84 years old.

Dr. Lin was an internationally renowned physical chemist and theoretical chemist who dedicated his life’s work to a wide range of fields, including Ultra-Fast Processes theory, nonlinear spectroscopy, and molecular reaction dynamics. After receiving his Ph.D. at the University of Utah in 1964, Dr. Lin began his teaching career at Arizona State University’s Department of Chemistry. In 1993, he returned to Taiwan to lead the Preparation Office of the Institute of Atomic and Molecular Sciences at Academia Sinica, and served as its founding Director in 1995.

In addition to his many outstanding scholarly achievements, Dr. Lin dedicated himself to nurturing young scientists, with his academic contributions being recognized in a special issue of The Journal of Physical Chemistry A published in 2007. Dr. Lin also received numerous honors, including the Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship and the Taiwanese American Foundation Prize. Dr. Lin was elected Academia Sinica Academician in 1984.
