Academician Kuo-Hsiung Lee passed away in the United States on October 24, 2021. He was 81 years old.
Dr. Lee was an internationally renowned figure in the fields of medicinal chemistry, biological activity, and Chinese medicine, who devoted his life to research on biological activities of natural products and their medical applications. Dr. Lee published over 800 papers, received over 100 patents, and discovered thousands of active ingredients and their derivative syntheses for use in medicinal developments for treating illnesses such as cancer and AIDS. Beginning in 1970, Dr. Lee taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, founding the Natural Products Research Laboratories in 1983 and serving as its Director since then.
Dr. Lee also made outstanding contributions to the biotechnology industry in Taiwan, enhancing research in Chinese medicine development through promoting international industries and academic exchanges.
During his distinguished career, Dr. Lee was elected as Fellow of the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the American Society of Pharmacognosy. In addition, Dr. Lee received numerous honors from different countries, including Taiwan’s Lifu Academic Award for Chinese Medicine, the Outstanding Achievement Award from the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis and the Norman R. Farnsworth Research Achievement Award from the American Society of Pharmacognosy, as well as the Kitasato Microbial Chemistry Medal and the Order of the Rising Sun, Gold Rays with Neck Ribbon from the government of Japan. Dr. Lee was elected Academia Sinica Academician in 1996.
