Academician Pien-Chien Huang passed away in the United States on August 3, 2020. He was 90 years old.

Dr. Huang was an internationally renowned biochemist and molecular biologist who dedicated his life’s work to molecular genetics. His main contribution lies in the study of recombinant DNA technology, cloning and site-directed mutagenesis techniques, and protein engineering methodology.Dr. Huang and his wife Dr. Ru Chih Chow contributed significantly to the founding of Academia Sinica’s Institute of Molecular Biology, serving as remarkable examples who inspired numerous scholars abroad to return to Taiwan and serve at the Institute. Dr. Huang was the Founding Dean of National Tsing Hua University’s College of Life Science and founder of National Chiao Tung University’s Institute of Biological Science and Technology. His contributions to higher education in Taiwan have been truly monumental.

Dr. Huang served as Professor at the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and the Department of Biophysics, Johns Hopkins University. During his distinguished career, Dr. Huang received numerous honors, including the NIH Research Career Development Award and the American Chemical Society’s Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Huang was elected Academia Sinica Academician in 1986.
