Academician Thomas S. Huang passed away in the United States on April 25, 2020. He was 84 years old.

Dr. Huang was renowned for his outstanding scholarly achievements in the fields of signal processing, pattern recognition, and computer vision. A pioneering researcher, Dr. Huang developed a method for deriving the relationship between movements in three dimensions into movement from two-dimensional images, earning praise as the “Chinese Father of Computer Vision”.

Dr. Huang served as the William L. Everitt Distinguished Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. His previous positions in Taiwan included Distinguished Chair Professor at National Taiwan University, and Honorary Professor at National Chiao Tung University. During his distinguished career, Dr. Huang received numerous honors, including Guggenheim Fellow, the V. Humboldt U.S. Senior Scientist Award, and the Pan Wen-Yuan Outstanding Research Award, and was also elected a Member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), National Academy of Engineering (USA), and Chinese Academy of Sciences. Dr. Huang was elected Academia Sinica Academician in 2008.
