How can Li+, a monocation with only 2 electrons, prevent suicide and bipolar recurrence?

A multinational team comprising of Todor Dudev, Karine Mazmanian, Felix Weng, Cedric Grauffel led by Carmay Lim, Distinguished Research Fellow at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, has explored this question in a recent publication in Accounts of Chemical Research. They have provided a unifying physicochemical basis that underlies lithium’s multifaceted effects based on its competition as a free monocation with native cations in proteins and as a phosphate-bound polyanionic complex modulating the host protein function.
