Academician Tzong-Shian Yu passed away in Taipei on August 3, 2019. He was 90 years old.

Dr. Yu received his Ph.D. in economics at Indiana University, and upon returning home to Taiwan devoted himself to promoting international exchange in economic research, as well as recruiting and training scholars at Academia Sinica’s Institute of Economics, where he served as Deputy Director and subsequently as Director.

In 1980, Dr. Yu helped establish the Chung-Hua Institution for Economic Research (CIER), thereby becoming one of the few scholars involved in the establishment of the two most prominent economic institutions in Taiwan. These achievements earned him recognition as one of Taiwan’s indispensable economists.

Dr. Yu’s many remarkable achievements include creating a macroeconomic model and founding a think-tank on finance and economics for government budgets plus accounting and statistics offices, thereby initiating Taiwan’s economic research and forecasting, which made prominent contributions to the nation’s development.

Dr. Yu dedicated himself to publishing policy recommendations and undertaking research on Taiwan’s economy and industry, with the fruitful results of his work being published in more than 10 books and 170 papers in Chinese and English, as well as editing over 30 books about economics written in these languages. In addition to his many years of service at Academia Sinica’s Institute of Economics, he also served as the Vice President and President at CIER, as well as the Director and Chairman of the Board at the Chinese Institute of Economics and Business. His many accolades include the Outstanding Contribution Award bestowed by the Chinese Statistical Association (Taiwan) and the Honorary Academy Award granted by the CIER. Dr. Yu was elected an Academician of Academia Sinica in 1988.
