Distinguished Research Fellow Benjamin Fong Chao and Joint-Appointment Research Fellow Kuo-Fong Ma at the Institute of Earth Sciences have been elected as American Geophysical Union Fellow. The American Geophysical Union (AGU) selects only a small number of Fellows each year to recognize the excellent research achievements and outstanding academic leadership of the new Fellows.

Dr. Benjamin Fong Chao contributes significantly in space geodesy and geodynamics. He was the director of the Institute of Earth Sciences and the president of the Asia Oceania Geosciences Society (AOGS). Dr. Kuo-Fong Ma contributes significantly in the field of seismology and earthquake sources. She was the head of the Department of Earth Sciences at the National Central University. She is currently the Chief Scientist of the Taiwan Earthquake Research Center (TEC, its headquarter office is located in the Institute of Earth Sciences).

The American Geophysical Union is the largest earth science society in the world, with more than 60,000 professional members. The qualification for being selected as a Fellow is very strict, only one-thousandth of the number of professional members of the current year. In December this year, the American Geophysical Union will honor the academic visions and outstanding achievements of the new Fellows at the AGU Fall Meeting in San Francisco.
