Stem cells have immense therapeutic values in regenerative medicine, yet current protocols in stem cell maintenance have logistical and safety concerns as they are based on live cells and animal product-based feeder systems. A research group led by Dr. Che-Ming Jack Hu, at the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, demonstrates a hydrogelated feeder layer technology, which instills hydrogels into cellular monolayers to stabilize and preserve their functionality. Hydrogelated feeder layer is demonstrated to outperform live feeder layers in expanding human induced pluripotent stem cells in the study. This study was recently published in Advanced Healthcare Materials.
