Academician Tien T. Tsong passed away in the United States on May 28, 2022. He was 88 years old.

Dr. Tsong was an internationally renowned physician. His research focused mainly on surface physics, nanoscience, atomic resolution microscopy, and surface atomic and molecular dynamics, with pioneering contributions in atom-probe field ion microscope development. After receiving his Ph.D. from Pennsylvania State University in 1966, Dr. Tsong taught there until 1993.

Dr. Tsong served as the Director of the Institute of Physics, Academia Sinica from 1993 to 1999 and founded the Nanoscience Laboratory. His academic efforts enhanced Taiwan’s international reputation in nanoscience research.

During his distinguished career, Dr. Tsong received numerous honors. He was elected Fellow of Germany’s Alexander von Humboldt Foundation, the Japanese Society for the Promotion of Science, the American Physical Society, the UK’s Institute of Physics, the Physical Society of the Republic of China (PSROC), and was a Member of the World Academy of Sciences (TWAS). He received the Achievement Award of the Taiwanese-American Foundation in 1997, the National Outstanding Research Lectureship (Physical Science), Academia Sinica in 1999, and the Presidential Science Prize in 2007. Dr. Tsong was elected Academia Sinica Academician in 1992.
