Academician Ovid J. L. Tzeng receives Radio Broadcast Golden Bell Award for Popularizing Science Education

Academician Ovid J.L. Tzeng and senior radio broadcast host Ms. Su-Yen Lai, received a radio broadcast Golden Bell Award for “Best Host of an Educational and Cultural Program” on October 14 for co-hosting the popular science program “Science for Everyone” (人人都是科學人).

Academician Tzeng has been a co-host of the National Education Radio program with Ms. Lai since 2010. In the program, the hosts help listeners to find scientific concepts in everyday life and transform scientific knowledge into easy-to-understand concepts.

The Golden Bell Awards for Radio Broadcast ( 廣播金鐘獎 ) are awarded annually by the Government Information Office.

Academician Ovid J.L. Tzeng has long been devoted to the promotion of science education, with the hope of elevating science knowledge in Taiwan. During his term as chairperson of Academia Sinica’s Science Education Promotion Committee, Dr. Tzeng urged academicians to deliver science lectures in high schools and formulated goals for public science education. Academician Tzeng actively advocates the development of popular science education stating that: “Taiwan needs not only universities, but university culture; and not only scientists, but science culture”.

In addition to co-hosting the radio program, Dr. Tzeng introduced the magazine Scientific American (科學人) to Taiwan. He has written articles for the magazine’s column “Viewpoint” in which he shares his scientific philosophies and unique insights on the future development of science for over 10 years. Academician Tzeng’s witty writing style and creative thinking proved popular, and in 2004, he won the “Golden Tripod Award” (金鼎獎), which recognizes outstanding individuals and organizations in the world of publishing.
