Academician C.F. Jeff Wu was recently selected by the Committee of Presidents of Statistical Societies (COPSS) as the recipient of the 2011 COPSS Fisher Lecture Award. He delivered this year’s Fisher Lecture entitled "Post-Fisherian Experimentation: From Physical to Virtual" at the Joint Statistical Meetings in Miami Beach, Florida on August 3. The event was attended by over 1000 professionals from statistics-related fields. Academician Wu has long been honored for his significant contributions to the field of statistics. His contributions span the full range of statistics, from theory to application, and touch many applied domains, from sample surveys to nanotechnology. Wu received the award for his “fundamental contributions to the planning, analysis and interpretation of statistical studies that have had a profound impact on the practice of statistics, especially in engineering; this includes significant results on resampling methods, theory of experimental design and pioneering work in industrial statistics that have changed the way statistical studies are used to optimize products and processes.” The Fisher Lecture Award is awarded to individuals who have very high recognition of meritorious achievement and scholarship in statistical science and recognizes high significant impact of statistical methods on scientific investigations. The COPSS award and lectureship is presented annually and whenever possible the lecture is conducted at the Joint Statistical Meetings (JSM), the largest annual gathering of statisticians in North America.
Dr. Wu holds the Coca-Cola Chair in Engineering Statistics at the H. Milton Stewart School of Industrial and Systems Engineering at Georgia Tech, as well as a professorship at the school. He was selected to be an Academician of Academia Sinica in 2000 and, in 2004, he was elected as a member of the United States National Academy of Engineering. He received his first award from COPSS, the COPSS President Award, in 1987.
