Dr. Tingye Li, Academician of the Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, died on December 27, 2012 in the United States at age 81. Being an expert in the fields of electronics engineering and applied physical sciences, he was renowned for his contributions to optical fiber communications and light-wave technology.
Dr. Li was the recipient of numerous awards. He became a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering in 1980, Academician of Academia Sinica in 1994, and a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering in 1996. In 2009, he was awarded the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers) Edison Medal.
Born in 1931, Dr. Li received his B.S. degree from the University of Witwatersrand, South Africa in 1953. He obtained his M.S. in 1955 and his Ph.D. in 1958 from Northwestern University. In 1957 he began working at AT&T Bell Laboratories where he stayed until his retirement in 1998. He made enormous contributions to the development of the first WDM (wavelength-division multiplexing) system, which constituted a revolutionary breakthrough in the development of fiber optic communications.
