Dr. Chia-Chiao Lin, Academician of the Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences, died on January 13, 2013 in Beijing at age 97.
Born in 1916, Dr. C. C. Lin graduated from Beijing’s Tsinghua University with a Bachelor of Science in 1937. He received his Master of Science from the University of Toronto in 1941, and in 1944 obtained his Ph.D. from the California Institute of Technology. Dr. Lin became faculty member at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1947 and taught there for 40 years.
Dr. C.C. Lin was a world-renowned expert in fluid dynamics, applied mathematics and also an astrophysicist. He was a member of a range of scholarly societies such as the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (1951), Academician of Academia Sinica (1958), the US National Academy of Sciences (1962), and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (1994). In 1979 he became Emeritus Professor at Beijing’s Tsinghua University and in 1987 was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from that same institution, later in 2001 being appointed as Professor there. In August 2002 he returned to Beijing and became Honorary Director of Tsinghua University’s Zhou Pei-Yuan Center for Applied Mathematics.
