Dr. Yi-Wei Liu at the Institute of Earth Sciences in Academia Sinica and her international research team first apply boron isotopes to investigate calcification site fluid pH of 10 marine calcifying organisms that exhibiting divers calcifying responses to ocean acidification. Their results show that, although calcification site fluid pH is not always closely coupled to calcification responses, all 10 species elevate their calcification site fluid pH to above seawater pH under elevated atmospheric CO2.

Their results suggest that this pH regulation strategy appears to be a polyphyletic, if not universal, response to OA among marine calcifiers. The research was published in the Science Advances.

How marine calcifiers response to ocean acidification by adjusting internal pH?
