Academician Wen Fong passed away in the United States on October 3, 2018. He was 88 years old.

Dr. Fong was a renowned scholar of art history and cultural history, dedicating his life to analyzing Chinese paintings via the use of Western theories. In addition, he created Structural Analysis, a new methodology for the study of Chinese paintings, thereby shaping discourse on Chinese art history in the Western world. His achievements in this field have earned recognition worldwide.

Dr. Fong served as Professor in the Department of Art and Archaeology at Princeton, being granted the title of Professor Emeritus upon his retirement. In addition, he concurrently worked as Consultative Chairman of Department of Asian Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. During his tenure, Dr. Fong not only enhanced the quality of the museum’s Asian art holdings, but established the largest collection of Chinese art in the West, which is encyclopedic in both its quality and diversity. In 1996, he took the lead in arranging for Taiwan’s National Palace Museum to organize travelling exhibitions in the United States, thereby drawing the world’s attention to Taiwanese art.

Dr. Fong served as Corresponding Research Fellow at the Institute of History and Philology, and was elected as Academician during the 19th Convocation of 1992.
