Academician Shing-Tung Yau was awarded the Marcel Grossmann Award (MG Award) on July 2, 2018 at the 15th Marcel Grossmann Meeting held in Rome, Italy. He is not only the first winner of this prestigious award in Taiwan but also the first ethnic Chinese mathematician to be awarded this major honor in the field of physics.
At the award ceremony, the organizer remarked that Dr. Shing-Tung Yau was awarded the MG Award “for the proof of the positivity of total mass in the theory of general relativity and perfecting as well the concept of quasi-local mass, for his proof of the Calabi conjecture, for his continuous inspiring role in the study of black holes physics.”
Dr. Shing-Tung Yau is currently the William Caspar Graustein Professor of Mathematics at Harvard University and one of the most influential mathematicians in the world. His research profoundly transformed and expanded the role of partial differential equations in differential geometry, impacting various branches of mathematics and physics including topology, algebraic geometry, representation theory, and general relativity. During his distinguished career, he has won numerous accolades including the Fields Medal—the highest honor in the field of mathematics, the Wolf Prize, and was elected as an Academician of Academia Sinica in 1984.
Marcel Grossmann was a famous mathematics and physicist. To showcase and commemorate his contributions to the field of physics, the Marcel Grossmann Meeting was founded in 1975 and held every three years. The inaugural Marcel Grossmann Awards were presented at the 1985 conference, with prizes given in the individual and institution categories.
