33rd Convocation of Academicians convenes in Taipei  from July 2 to July 5, 2018

Academia Sinica’s upcoming 33rd Convocation of Academicians convenes in Taipei from July 2 to July 5, 2018. Held on campus at the Center of Academic Activities (CAA) and the Humanities and Social Sciences Building (HSSB), this conference will be attended by approximately 209 Academicians from both Taiwan and abroad. To kick off this year’s convocation, a welcome dinner banquet will be held on Sunday, July 1, which will then be followed by a Mid-Summer Concert featuring performances by Lee’s Quartet and the Academia Sinica Chorus.

On Monday, July 2, the first day of the convocation, an eventful schedule has been planned. Following the opening ceremony, there will be a group photo session for academicians, a badge awarding ceremony, and a biennial report of Academia Sinica. During the afternoon, academicians will break off into divisions to begin reviewing candidates for the 2018 class of academicians.

During the second day of the convocation (Tuesday, July 3), the meeting will commence with a two keynote addresses: Academician David Der-Wei Wang will deliver a speech on “Taiwan: A Literary Engagement with History,” and Academician Biing-Hwang (Fred) Juang will speak on the topic “Artificial Intelligence, Scientifically Speaking.” Then, academicians will continue to discuss comprehensive proposals by division. In the afternoon, there will be a panel discussion on “The Significance of Fundamental Research,” briefed by the Minister of Science and Technology Liang-Gee Chen. Minister without Portfolio Tsung-Tsong Wu of the Executive Yuan will serve as a panelist for discussion. Following this panel discussion, the Committee for Improvement of Organization and Operation of Academia Sinica will give a report, and then the floor will open for discussion of various proposals on important issues. The second day of the convocation will round out with a special musical event held at the Kwo-Kwang Conference Hall of the CPC Corporation in the evening. This special “2018 Academia Sinica Dancing Strings Concert” will feature the Evergreen Symphony Orchestra.

On Wednesday, July 4, the second and third divisional review sessions of candidates will be conducted. A comprehensive review of all nominated candidates will be held in the morning of Thursday, July 5. In the afternoon of the same day, a formal vote will be held to elect the 2018 class of Academicians of Academia Sinica. Following the election, President James C. Liao will hold a press conference to announce the newly elected academicians.
