Academician Min Sze passed away in the United States on November 6, 2023. He was 87 years old.

Dr. Sze was a highly influential authority in semiconductor devices physics and technology. In 1967, he discovered the “floating-gate memory effect,” and produced the first non-volatile semiconductor memory (NVSM) chip, which plays an important role in contemporary electronics. Dr. Sze was also a prolific writer. His book, Physics of Semiconductor Devices, is a classic in contemporary engineering and applied sciences, has been translated into multiple languages, and is regarded as a must-read standard textbook in the field of semiconductor devices.

Dr. Sze earned his Ph.D. from the Department of Electrical Engineering at Stanford University in 1963, and worked at Bell Labs from 1963 to 1989, during which time he returned to Taiwan to teach several times. Since 1990, he served at National Chiao Tung University. In 1998, he served as the Director of the National Nano Device Laboratories (NDL) at the National Applied Research Laboratories (NARLabs), and as a member of Advanced Research Advisory Committee at the Industrial Technology Research Institute. Since 2004, he served as Senior Advisor at the NDL (which became the Taiwan Semiconductor Research Institute in 2019), and was a key driver of the semiconductor industry in Taiwan. Dr. Sze was also the Member of the 16th and 25th Council of Academia Sinica, and has been a major contributor to academic research at Academia Sinica.

Dr. Sze was the Honorary Chair Professor at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University. He was awarded the IEEE J.J. Ebers Award, the Executive Yuan Outstanding Contribution in Science and Technology Award, the Ministry of Education’s 1st and 4th National Forum Host, the Flash Memory Summit Lifetime Achievement Award, the IEEE Celebrated Member Award, and the Future Science Prize in mathematics and computer science. He was an IEEE Fellow, member of the US National Academy of Engineering, foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and an Industrial Technology Research Institute Laureate. Dr. Sze was elected Academia Sinica Academician in 1994.
