Academia Sinica now accepts research proposals for the 2018 Grand Challenges in Neuroscience. Applicants should submit their applications by Oct 31, 2017. Any application beyond the deadline will not be considered. Since Santiago Ramón y Cajal deciphered the “neuron” dogma of the brain more than a hundred years ago, neuroscience research has made tremendous progress. However, many important questions of fundamental importance and great societal concerns remain unsolved. For example, we still know very little about the molecular circuits that enable us to learn, remember, or reason. Similarly, we have practically no way to treat patients when their memory degenerates, such as in Alzheimer’s disease. These are just examples of many more major challenges we face. Even moving towards more understanding requires major breakthroughs in multiple fronts. Following the “Grand Challenges” letter by President Liao sent on September. 25, 2017, we now announce the seed grant project to support research that may lead to “critical breakthroughs” in “grand challenges” in neuroscience. We call for seed proposals that aim to tackle key questions and/or unmet needs in the area of neuroscience. The proposer(s) should (1) identify a grand challenge problem in neuroscience, (2) analyze limitation of current status, (3) define the critical problems that hinder advancement, and (4) propose innovative approaches that may lead to a breakthrough. All Academia Sinica PIs are eligible to apply individually or in small groups, regardless of previous research experience. Continuation or small deviations from existing projects are discouraged. The seed grant aims to provide a chance of feasibility study, therefore the upper limit for the first year (2018) funding is 2 million NTD per project. The budget will be solely allocated to the project PI. The project PI will take sole responsibility for the coordination and execution of the project. Follow-up and longer-term supports will be possible, depending on the level of progress. How to apply Please submit your application with your research proposal (Seed Grant Proposal_Neuroscience.doc) and a one page summary slide. The application should be sent to Ms. Evelyne Huang, Department of Academic Affairs and Instrument Service. (Tel: 02-2789-9850, Email: grandneuro@gate.sinica.edu.tw) We will reply to confirm the submission.
