Academician Ovid Tzeng was re-elected as a member of the of International Council for Science's (ICSU) Committee on Freedom and Responsibility in the Conduct of Science (CFRS) during the committee's regular meeting in Paris, May 18 and19.
Academician Ovid Tzeng was first elected a CFRS Committee member in 2006 when the committee was first formed. The Committee is charged with safeguarding the Principle of Universality, particularly the rights and responsibilities of scientists in today's rapidly changing world.
The International Council for Science (ICSU) was founded in 1931 and is the oldest non-governmental scientific organization committed to international cooperation for the benefit of humanity. Academia Sinica has been a member of ICSU since 1937 and represents all the ICSU affiliated academic bodies in Taiwan.
Dr. Tzeng is a Distinguished Research Fellow of the Institute of Linguistics who specializes in cognitive psychology, neurolinguistics and cognitive neuroscience. He currently serves as Minister without Portfolio in the Executive Yuan. He served as Minister of Education from May 2000 to February 2002 and was a Vice President of Academia Sinica from 2002 until 2006.
Each CFRS committee member serves for three years, and each year the committee members meet twice for a two-day closed meeting. Half of the current membership of the committee will be replaced as a result of the latest election. During his new term as a CFRS committee member Dr. Tzeng is expected to introduce more ideas about the rights and responsibilities of sciences to Taiwan.
