Synopsis
The Jade Hairpin was written in thirty three scenes by Gao Lian in the Ming Dynasty (AD 1368-1644). It tells Pan Bizheng and Chen Jiaolian’s story in the Southern Song Dynasty (AD 1127-1279). Bizheng and Jiaolian were made a couple before they were born upon their parents’ oral agreement, but they never met each other until the turmoil of a war. Bizheng failed the examination in the capital city due to his illness; he was ashamed to return home, so he sought shelter from his aunt, an abbess of a Taoist temple. There he met Jiaolian who lived with her pseudonym called Miaochang. Bizheng and Miaochang fell in love after they met by chance.
