Taiwan Scholars to Study Research Integrity

Four scholars, three of whom were instrumental in the compilation of the Singapore Statement on Research Integrity signed by key members of the international scientific community earlier this year, will give lectures on research ethics and responsible research conduct at Academia Sinica on December 16, 2010. The lectures, along with a round-table discussion featuring the four lecturers and Academia Sinica President Chi-Huey Wong and Academician Ovid Tzeng, will make up the Workshop on Research Integrity. All of the lectures will be given in English. Members of the media are welcome to attend.

During the 2010 World Conference on Research Integrity held in September this year, members of the global scientific community from over 50 countries jointly issued “The Singapore Statement on Research Integrity” to call for global consensus on research integrity. Research Integrity embodies a range of good research practice and conduct including fairness in intellectual honesty in research, peer review, and the protection and care of human and animal subjects in the conduct of research. With the aim of localizing this global effort, Academia Sinica, together with the Ministry of Education, the National Science Council, and the University System of Taiwan, has co-organized this workshop to promote awareness and compliance of research integrity in Taiwan research settings.

All four lectures will be related to the latest developments in various aspects of research integrity and stress the global responsibility of the scientific community: Dr. David Vaux, a biochemistry professor at La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science, Australia and a Fellow of Australian Academy of Science, will give a talk entitled “Integrity in Scientific Publications - What to Do, and What to Look Out for?”; Mr. Tony Mayer, a Europe Representative of the President's Office at Nanyang Technological University of Singapore, will deliver a speech entitled “Conflicts of Interest - A Matter of Honesty and Transparency”; Dr. Andrew T. Huang, President and CEO of Koo Foundation Sun Yat-Sen Cancer Center and Chairman of the Board of Andrew T. Huang Medical Education Promotion Fund, will give a talk entitled “Research Integrity: Self-discipline and Society”; and Dr. Melissa S. Anderson, Professor of Higher Education in the Department of Organizational Leadership, Policy and Development at the University of Minnesota, will give a talk entitled “Research Integrity: Challenges in Research Environments, Complications in International Research”.

Following the presentations, the four lecturers will join a 50-minute round table talk, in which Academia Sinica President Chi-Huey Wong, and Academician Ovid Tzeng who currently serves as a Minister without Portfolio at Executive Yuan, will also take part.
