Tung Tso-pin (1895-1963) was a great scholar notable for his work discovering and studying oracle bones. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of Tung’s passing, the Museum of the Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica will hold the special exhibition Discovery to showcase his artistic and academic achievements.
Exhibition Highlights:
1. Oracle Bones: The founding director of the Institute of History and Philology Fu Ssu-nien had Tung Tso-pin select fifty oracle bones to be displayed at the third National Art Exhibition held in Chongqing in the winter of 1942. We will again put these fifty pieces on display in Taipei at the IHP to recapture the moment.
2. Archival Documents: Documents and correspondence related to the Chongqing National Art Exhibition as well as Tung’s excavation and study of oracle bones will be on display.
3. Calligraphy: Some forty pieces of Tung’s oracle bone script calligraphy, many related to his close friendships, will be on display.
4. Seals: This portion of the exhibition contains seals often used by Tung, including those engraved and given to him by Zeng Shao-jie and Tai Jing-nong as well as those he made for his own use.
5. Personal Study Effects: Tung’s ink stone, brush-washing bowl and other personal effects from his study will be on display.
