Congratulations to Academician Bor-ming Jahn who has been selected for the 2014 International Prize of the Geological Society of Japan (JGS). The JGS International Prize is presented to members or non-members of the Society who have made innovative contributions in geology as well as distinguished achievements in developing geology of Japan through studies of the Japanese Islands and the adjacent areas and/or co-operative researches with Japanese geologists.
In addition, “American Journal of Science” recently published a two-part Special Issue in honor of Bor-ming Jahn for his scientific accomplishment (American Journal of Science, January 2014; 314 (I) & 314 (II)). The special issue contains 21 articles, including a “Preface” summarizing his scientific career, and 750 pages. The “grand finale” paper was also authored by Prof. Jahn on the crustal evolution of Hokkaido, Japan
Academician Jahn was graduated from National Taiwan University (BSc 1963) and University of Minnesota (Ph.D. 1972). After his post-doctoral research work at the Johnson Space Center and Lunar Science Institute in Houston (1972-1976), he was recruited to Université de Rennes 1, France in 1976. He spent 27 years in Rennes as university professor and CNRS researcher. He came back to Taiwan taking the post of NTU Chair Professor in February 2003. He was then recruited to Academia Sinica as Distinguished Research Fellow and Director of Institute of Earth Sciences (IES) (08/2004 – 09/2010). After his retirement from Academia Sinica in 2010, he returned to NTU and assumed a new post of Distinguished Chair Professor (2010 – present). He is also a Corresponding Research Fellow at IES.
