Academician Jin Wu died of cancer of the ampulla of vater at National Cheng Kung University Hospital at the age of 74.
Born in 1934, Academician Wu received a doctoral degree in mechanics and hydraulics from University of Iowa. Academician Wu had been President of National Cheng Kung University (1994-1996), Minister of Education of the Republic of China (1996-1998), and was selected the Top Ranked Minister with Approving Rate over 70% by Gallup Poll (along with Surveys of China Times, United Daily News and Others) in 1997. Having done numerous contributions to the upgrading of Taiwan’s educational and academic fields, he was renowned for his active stance on educational progress, and was characterized as “a powerful force of change in educational reform.”
Due to his great achievements and contributions, Academician Wu had been granted many awards and honors in researches and education, including the Endowment Grant of the Longwood Foundation (1976), the Endowment Grant of the Unidel Foundation (1982), the Publication Award of American Society of Civil Engineers at Hydraulics Division (1988), Member of the US National Academy of Sciences (1995), the Medal of Distinguished Service of Republic of China (1998) as well as H. Fletcher Brown Chair Professorship at University of Delaware (1980-1994), Academician of Academia Sinica (1986), National Ocean Science Educator Award (1991-1994), and Asian Pacific American of the Year (1995) and so on.
The memorial service is scheduled to be held on January 27, 2008, in Tainan, Taiwan.
