Academician Lih J. Chen Receives Electronics and Photonics Science Award

Academician Lih J. Chen was awarded the 2010 Electronics and Photonics Division Award from the Electrochemical Society (ECS) in recognition of his “long-term and outstanding research on metallization in integrated circuit devices, thin film reactions, atomic scale structures and dynamics of nanomaterials” on April 25, 2010. The formal recognition took place during the 217th ECS Meeting in Vancouver, Canada, held between April 25 and April 30, 2010. Academician Chen was presented with an award scroll, a cash prize, and lifetime membership to the ECS.

The ECS is a US-based nonprofit organization that was founded in 1902 with the objective of advancing the theory and practice of electrochemistry, solid-state science and allied subjects, and encouraging research and dissemination of knowledge in these fields. The society has more than 8,000 individual members in over 70 countries worldwide as well as roughly 100 corporate members.

During his research career of over 30 years, Academician Chen has conducted extensive research on advanced metallization in integrated circuits. In recent years, he has focused on the investigation of low-dimensional nanostructured materials. He has published more than 420 papers in internationally-recognized journals.

Academician Chen is the President of National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), where he is also a Distinguished Chair Professor. His previous administrative posts include the Deputy Minister of the National Science Council of Taiwan (NSC, 2008-2010), the Vice President of the University System of Taiwan (2006-2008), and the Dean of the College of Engineering at NTHU (1999-2005).

Academician Chen has held many honorary positions. He is Academician of the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (2009) and a member of the American Vacuum Society (2001), the Asia-Pacific Academy of Advanced Materials (1998) and the Bohmische Physical Society (1982). He has also twice received the honor National Chair Professor from the Ministry of Education of Taiwan (1998-2001, 2001-2004). He was elected an Academician of Academia Sinica in 2006.
Academician Chen has also received numerous awards, including the NSC Award for Outstanding Principal Investigators (2001), the NSC Outstanding Research Award (1985-1995), the Ho Chin Tui Award (1993) and the Dr. Sun Yat-Sen Foundation Outstanding Research Award (1991). He also received the Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) William Hume-Rothery Award for his contributions to thin film science in 2008.
