Academician Ky Fan of the Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences passed away on March 22, 2010 at age 97.
Dr. Fan was a renowned mathematician as well as Research Fellow and Director of the Institute of Mathematics at Academia Sinica. He specialized in non-linear functional analysis and operator theory. He was the recipient of numerous honors, including Honorary Doctorate of Paris XI University and Honorary Professor of Beijing University. He was also Professor Emeritus of Beijing Normal University. Dr. Fan was elected Academician of Academia Sinica in 1964.
Academician Fan was born in Hangchow in 1914. In 1932, he began his studies in mathematics at Beijing University. After graduating in 1936, he continued to teach at Beijing University for several years. In 1939 he went to Paris for further studies in mathematics, earning his Ph.D. there in 1941. Upon graduation, he became a researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research. In 1945, he left for the United States, and conducted research at the Institute for Advanced Study. Dr. Fan taught at numerous universities in the United States including Northwestern University and U.C. Santa Barbara. From 1978 to 1984, Academician Fan served as Director of the Institute of Mathematics at Academia Sinica, officially retiring in 1985.
