The Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES) announced the establishment of the BMES Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering (CMBE) Shu Chien Achievement Award at the CMBE Annual Conference held in San Diego from January 7 to 11, 2014. The award, a BMES Special Interest Group (SIG) Award, will be bestowed upon an individual who has demonstrated meritorious contributions to the field of cellular and molecular bioengineering. The award will be evaluated annually and presented to an individual at the CMBE Annual Conference.
In introducing the award, the BES describes Academician Shu Chien as "well recognized as one of the foremost pioneers and educators in biomedical engineering world-wide. His vision and leadership to integrate biomedical engineering with cardiovascular physiology and molecular cell biology have greatly impacted the field of Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering. He isa role model who is beloved and admired by generations of scientists. To honor his many achievements in the field, this annual achievement award is dedicated to recognizing and honoring an individual who has made great contributions to Cellular and Molecular Bioengineering."
Professor Chien has won numerous awards during his 54-year academic career. Notably, in September 2011 he received the US 2011 National Medal of Science awarded by The White House, one of the highest honors bestowed by the United States government on scientists, engineers, and inventors.
To be eligible for the award, applicants must be BMES members. Applications will be screened by the BMES CMBE SIG Award Committee.
The Biomedical Engineering Society is one of the leading biomedical engineering societies in the United States of America. This interdisciplinary society was established on February 1, 1968, in response to a manifest need to provide a society representing both biomedical and engineering interests. The ongoing vision of the Society is to be recognized as the preeminent professional society for biomedical engineering and bioengineering. There are nearly 6,500 members in 2013.
