Academia Sinica is co-hosting the U.S.-Japan Cooperative Medical Sciences Program (USJCMSP) 17th Emerging Infectious Diseases Conference for 5 days from January 25, 2015 in the Humanities and Social Science Building at Academia Sinica. The USJCMSP is led by the U.S. National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour, and Welfare; the Japanese Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science, and Technology; and the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The conference explored the critical trends in research and prevention of infectious diseases in the public health domain throughout Asia.
Over 280 scientists, medical doctors and scholars in the public health field are expected to attend the conference. The sessions are categorized into 4 subjects: AIDS, acute respiratory infections (ARI), hepatitis, and viral diseases. In the opening ceremony on January 26 at 9:00 am, Academia Sinica Vice President Chien-Jen Chen, Colorado State University Professor Dr. Patrick J. Brennan and University of Tokyo Professor Dr. Aikichi Iwamoto delivered welcome remarks. Other honorable guests delivered opening remarks include Mr. Christopher J. Marut, Director of the American Institute in Taiwan; Mr. Takashi Hamada, Secretary General of the Taipei Office Interchange Association, Japan; and Dr. Steve Hsu-Sung Kuo, Director-General, the Centers for Disease Control, Ministry of Health and Welfare, R.O.C. (Taiwan). Academia Sinica President Dr. Chi-Huey Wong also delivered a keynote speech entitled “Influenza Virus: Detection, Drug Design and Universal Vaccine” following the opening ceremony.
The U.S.-Japan Cooperative Medical Sciences Program, which was inaugurated in 1965. The mission of the program is to further the prevention and treatment of the infectious diseases in North East and South East Asia. In recent years, the conference has been held in countries around the Asia Pacific Rim including Bangladesh in 2014 and Singapore in 2013.
