Academician Fan-Sen Wang to Succeed Academician Ts'ui-Jung Liu as Academia Sinica Vice President
 

Academician Fan-Sen Wang was appointed as a Vice President of Academia Sinica (Humanities and Social Sciences), succeeding the retiring Vice President Ts'ui-Jung Liu. The inauguration took place on the 4th floor of the Building for Humanities and Social Sciences at Academia Sinica on January 4, 2010.

Academician Ts'ui-Jung Liu was appointed to the vice presidency of Academia Sinica in 2003 by former President Yuan-tseh Lee and again in 2006 by President Chi-huey Wong. As Vice President, Academician Liu has served as director of the National Digital Archives Program, which promotes the digitalization of the nation’s cultural assets. She also served as acting director of the Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences at Academia Sinica between 2004 and 2005, and the director of the Institute of Taiwan History, Preparatory Office from 1998 to 2003, helping these then embryonic institutions to blossom. During her tenure, Vice President Liu also oversaw a number of legal committees at Academia Sinica. In addition to her administrative duties, Vice President Liu has managed to complete a number of books and publish over 60 academic papers. Her research focused on economic history, history of population and environmental history.

Dr. Liu became a Distinguished Research Fellow of the Institute of Taiwan History at Academia Sinica in 2001 following her election as an Academician in 1996. She received a Master of Arts in history from National Taiwan University in 1966 and a PhD in East Asian History and Languages from Harvard University in 1974. Between 1980 and 2006, Vice President Liu held several positions as a visiting scholar at universities around the world, including École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales in France and Georgetown University in the US whilst concurrently holding positions at National Taiwan University and Academia Sinica.

The incoming Vice President Fan-Sen Wang joined Academia Sinica in 1985. He is a distinguished research fellow (2005) of the Institute of History and Philology and served as director of the Institute from 2003-2009. He became an Academician in 2004 and was also the director of the Tsai Yuan-pei Research Center for Humanities and Social Sciences from 2003 to 2004. Academician Wang graduated from National Taiwan University with a Master's degree in history in 1983, and received his PhD in East Asian studies from Princeton University in 1993. His research interests include the history of modern Chinese culture, academic development and thought. He was elected a fellow of UK’s Royal Historical Society in 2005. Among his other honors he was awarded the Outstanding Scholar Award from Foundation for the Advancement of Outstanding Scholarship from 1999 to 2004.

Vice President Wang was the Director-General of the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences, National Science Council from 2000 to 2002, and since 2003 has been a member of the Council of Academic Reviewal & Evaluation, Ministry of Education and the Advisory Committee on Humanities and Social Science Development, National Science Council. He is also currently a member of the Steering Committee at the Center for Chinese Studies and a board member of the Foundation for Scholarly Exchange (Fulbright Taiwan). In addition to his administrative posts, Academician Wang is also a faculty member of National Taiwan University, National Tsing Hua University and National Chung Hsing University.

Academia Sinica has three vice presidents, representing the three major divisions of the Academy. The other incumbent vice presidents are Academician Chao-Han Liu (Mathematics and Physical Sciences) and Academician Andrew H.- J. Wang (Life Sciences).
