Prof. Doug N. C. Lin, a panel member in the Advisory Committee of Academia Sinica Institute of Astronomy and Astrophysics, officially accepted the offer as the Director of Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Peking University (KIAA-PKU) on Mar 2, 2007. Prof. Lin obtained his PhD degree in 1976 from Cambridge University. Since 1979, he has been on the faculty of UC Santa Cruz, and became a full professor in 1985. From 1996 he has been a member of the Advisory Committee of ASIAA. In 2002, he was elected Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. His main research fields include planet formation, structure and evolution, planet system dynamics, and protoplanet disks.
The Kavli Foundation was founded by industrialist Fred Kavli in 2000. It supports fundamental researches in the fields of astrophysics, nanoscience, and neuroscience. In June 2006, the Foundation announced the establishment of Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics at Peking University to carry out fundamental research on the origin and evolution of astrophysical structures, from planetary systems to the universe as a whole.
