Articulatory Adjustment: the Case of Palatalization

Dr. Hui-chuan J. Huang (Institute of Linguistics)

The slightly different pronunciations of English letter ‘C’ and Chinese word ‘west’ in fact provides clues to the different phonological systems of the two languages.  Given the contrast in the two illustrating forms ‘C’ and ‘west,’ the article discusses the articulatory adjustment that is involved in the so-called palatalization process.  Palatalization has clear articulatory motivations and is commonly found in the world’s languages.  Palatalization rules in different languages might differ in terms of what segments are affected.  Examples from Formosan languages are further given to illustrate the dialectal variations caused by palatalization and the potential interactions between palatalization and other phonological processes.
