The Chinese University of Hong Kong conferred upon Academician Cho-Yun Hsu and Tzu-Yow Yang degrees of Doctor of Literature honoris causa and of Doctor of Science honoris causa on December 4, 2008 in recognition of their outstanding contributions to academic advancement.
Academician Hsu is an internationally renowned historian accomplished at Asian studies. He was elected as an Academician in 1980 and now an Adjunct Research Fellow of Institute of History and Philology, Academia Sinica. Beside being conferred the degree of Doctor of Literature honoris causa by the Chinese University of Hong Kong, he has also been awarded as an Honorary Member of Phi Beto Kappa, the Qian Mu Lectureship of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Fu Ssu-nien Lectureship of Academia Sinica, the Kuo Ting Li Lectureship of Central University, the Yu Yingshih Lectureship of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the Honorary Doctorate of Humanities of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and the AAS Award for Distinguished Contribution for Asian Studies.
Academician Yang is a world-renowned aerospace engineer and Chancellor of UC, Santa Barbara, USA. He was elected as an Academician in 1992 and has been awarded as a Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics(AIAA), Structures, Structural Dynamics and Materials Award of AIAA, the Neil A. Armstrong Distinguished Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics of Purdue University, the Academician of National Academy of Engineering, U.S.A, the Benjamin Garver Lamme Gold Medal of the American Society of Engineering Education. The degree of Doctor of Science honoris causa conferred by the Chinese University of Hong Kong is the fifth Honorary Doctorate he received, others are from the Purdue University, USA, the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, the National Taiwan University, and the City University of Hong Kong.
