The Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS) announced four Academia Sinica academicians made the 2007 list of new elected members on November 13.
The annual meeting of TWAS held from November 12 to 16 in Trieste, Italy had elected 45 scientists as its new members. This year 45 scientists were elected as new TWAS members. Among them, four academicians, nominated by Academia Sinica, received the honor in four areas: Academia Sinica President Chi-Huey Wong, Chemical Sciences; Dr. Yan-Hwa Lee Wu, Structural, Cell and Molecular Biology; Dr. Chien-Te Chen, Physics; and Dr. Typhoon Lee, Astronomy and Space Sciences. In addition, Prof. Chih-Kung Lee, Executive Vice President of the Industrial Technology Research Institute at Ministry of Economic Affairs, was awarded the 2006 TWAS Prize in Engineering Sciences.
TWAS is the world's leading academy for scientists from the developing world. Its membership currently consists of 900 eminent scientists, more than 80 percent of whom live and work in the South. Founded and based in Trieste, TWAS also sponsors a large number of research and training programs for scientists from the developing world.
