Dr. Ya-Ju Hsu, Research Fellow from Institute of Earth Sciences, has won the 2017 Promising Women in Science Award of Wu Chien Shiung Scholarship Foundation. Dr. Hsu uses observations from the Global Positioning System (GPS) Network, seismicity and earthquake focal mechanisms, and borehole strain-meter array in and around Taiwan to study the physical properties of fault zones, the mechanism of crustal deformation of different periods of times during a seismic cycle, and the states of stress and strain in the lithosphere. This information is utilized to estimate fault slip rates, potential for the occurrence of major earthquakes, and the maximum earthquake magnitude. These findings provide important constraints for seismic hazard assessment and mitigation. Dr. Hsu has published many scientific papers in renowned international journals, e.g., Science, Geophysical Research Letters, Journal of Geophysical Research, Geology, etc.
