Academician Horng-Tzer Yau has been elected member of the US National Academy of Sciences, the Academy announced on April 30, 2013. Dr. Yau is one of the 84 new members. Including the newly elected members, the Academy now has 2,179 active members and 437 foreign associates.
Dr. Yau received his B.Sc. from National Taiwan University in 1981 and Ph.D. from Princeton University in 1987. He is a Professor of Department of Mathematics at Harvard University. Dr. Yau received many academic honors including the Poincare Prize (2000), Member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences (2001), and Academician of Academia Sinica (2002).
The National Academy of Sciences is a private organization of scientists and engineers dedicated to the furtherance of science and its use for the general welfare. It was established in 1863 by a congressional act of incorporation signed by President Abraham Lincoln that calls on the Academy to act as an official adviser to the federal government, upon request, in any matter of science or technology.
