The Institution of Taiwan History (ITH) is devoted to the study of Taiwanese history over the past 20 years. It continually aims to preserve Taiwanese cultural heritage. To present the rich variety of digital content, the ITH and the Academia Sinica Digital Center have jointly organized this exhibition.
The exhibition contains the colorful lives of notable historical figures, dating from the 1860s to the 1960s. Selected individuals, include: BaozhenShen (Ching Dynasty Officialdom), Chihu Hsu (Lukang family-run business trader), the Chen family (operated a family-run Nagasaki Tai-Eki Trading Company), Kazue Tsutsumibayashi (international entrepreneur), Tokusaburou Miyoshi (tea trader), Chenpo Chen (painter), Tzemei Kao (pianist), Hsientang Lin (anti-colonialism reformer), Jhaojia Yang (nationalist activist), and Kiyoshi Hasegawa (Taiwan Sotokufu Governor). The displayed materials showcase family letters, photographs, personal diaries, private manuscripts, and certificates.
These exhibited items were collected through contributions of various donors from different corners of the world, from which memories about Taiwan could be re-explored. These historical elements depict trading networks in Taiwan and beyond, featuring intellectuals' campaigns for reform, and nostalgic expressions from those who were far away from home. We are inviting you to trace the footsteps of sojourners, local inhabitants, in and out of Taiwan and its offshore islands, throughout different time frames, while rediscovering precious memories that belong to this land. Except for still images and paper documents, interactive activities are offered in the exhibition hall, such as an online themed game, video clips, souvenir postcards, special passport stamps etc.
This spectacular exhibition also coincides with the 20th anniversary of the ITH. Private collections are not only the main feature in this exhibition, but also emphasizes that everyone plays an important role in contributing the history of Taiwan today. History is not something too profound to be understood, but part of daily lives. Therefore, awareness in preserving the cultural heritage and passion for Taiwanese history are intended to be raised. Kuo-Hsing Hsieh, the Director of the ITH and Project Investigator of Academia Sinica Digital Center, will host the opening ceremony on August 29, 2013. Donors and distinguished guests are being invited. We also welcome the media for interviews.
