Important Notice to Pedestrians on Use of 4-Way Crossings (Two Diagonal Pedestrian Crosswalks) near Academia Sinica Entrance

In the past six months, numerous accidents have occurred due to collisions between pedestrians and motor vehicles making left turns at the 4-way crossings at the intersection between Academia Road, Section 2 and Jiu Zhuang Street (the two intersecting diagonal pedestrian crosswalks located between the current main entrance of Academia Sinica and the old main entrance.)

Pedestrians must make sure to strictly observe the signs and placards indicating the time periods these 4-way crossings may be used.  Use of these 4-way crossings is ONLY permitted on school days from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM during school hours of the Hu Shi Elementary School.  These 4-way crossings may NOT be used on Saturdays, Sundays, during summer and winter vacations and hours outside of 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM. The use of 4-way crossings during off-periods is strictly prohibited. During off-hours please use the vertical zebra crossings to cross the street. Jaywalking or diagonally crossing the street during off-hours is strictly forbidden.

Academia Sinica has already requested help from the Taipei City Department of Transportation to deliberate this matter, improve pedestrian signals and placards, and possibly extend hours for using the aforementioned 4-way crossings. The following aspects are currently being deliberated:

1) The additional installation of yellow flashing lights and placards for pedestrians.

2) Extending the use of 4-way crossings to weekends and summer and winter vacations. This may help prevent confusion and traffic danger.

3) Besides the current special access hours from 7:00 AM to 7:00 PM, extension of these hours is being deliberated.
