Academician Y. Austin Chang, Wisconsin Distinguished Professor Emeritus and internationally renowned materials scientist, passed away on August 2, 2011 at age 80. Dr. Chang was born in 1930. In 1954 he graduated with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering from the University of California at Berkeley. In 1963 he received his Ph.D. in Metallurgy, also from UC Berkeley. Beginning in 1967, he served as associate professor, professor and department chair at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. In 2006, he became Distinguished Professor Emeritus at UW-Madison.
Dr. Chang was the recipient of numerous awards and honors. In 1996 he became a member of the US National Academy of Engineering. In 2000 he became a Foreign Member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. He was elected as an Academician of Academia Sinica in 2010.
