Dr. Chiu-yu Tseng, Distinguished Research Fellow and Director of Institute of Linguistics, was elected President International Association of Chinese Linguistics (IACL) and inaugurated on May 4th, 2014 during the general assembly of the 22th annual conference of IACL. She was the Vice President of IACL prior to the presidency.
IACL was founded in Singapore in 1991 and has been the only academic organization named after Chinese linguistics. The Association currently consists of 469 members from over 20 countries and has served as a major platform for scholars and students around the globe who are interested in Chinese linguistics and related studies. The annual conference of IACL has been held in Asia, Europe and America since 1992. The 22nd symposium IACL-22 is hosted by School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (SLLC) of University of Maryland on May 2nd to 4th, 2014; organized and chaired by the undergraduate Program Director Prof. Minglang Zhou. In response to the current globalization of Chinese, the symposium is specially organized in conjunction with the 26th Northeast Conference on Chinese Linguistics (NACCL-26). To honor the inauguration and as a highlight of the conference, Dr. Chiu-yu Tseng was invited to deliver a Keynote and Presidential speech of her research entitled “An Interdisciplinary Approach to Phonetic Investigations of Prosodic Categorical Differentiation”.
There were over 600 submissions received and one-third of them were accepted. A total of 272 registered participants from 11 different countries and 128 universities or academic institutions took part in this conference. The program includes various subfields of Chinese linguistics and consists of 3 keynote speeches, thematic panels of presentations in 4 parallel sessions, a symposium on the Globalization of Chinese and two roundtable meetings.
In her new capacity as the IACL president, she will serve the community of Chinese Linguistics at large, and at the same time enhance the visibility of both the Institute of Linguistics as well as Academia Sinica.
