Resolution of immunodeficiency-associated inflammation by regulatory T cells

A research team led by Distinguished Research Fellow Dr. Ming-Zong Lai of the Institute of Molecular Biology, together with Assistant Research Fellow Dr. Ya-Jen Chang of the Institute of Biomedical Sciences, discovered a new approach by using regulatory T cells (Tregs) to control inflammation in primary immunodeficiency. Tregs are prone to loss of suppressive activity in individuals with primary immunodeficiency disease XLP-2, and wild-type Tregs transfer rescues XLP-2 model mouse from infection-induced persistent inflammation. Furthermore, the blockade of the IL-6 receptor restores the function of defective Tregs and confers survival to inflammatory infection in XLP-2 mouse. This work was published in Nature Communications on January 31, 2018.
