| Academician Simon Sze recognized as the 2017 “Celebrated Member” of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers |

The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) named Dr. Simon Sze, Academician of Academia Sinica, as one of the two “Celebrated Members” of 2017 on December 4, 2017. Since the inception of this award, only nine scientists from around the world have received this prestigious recognition, and Dr. Sze is the first Taiwanese to receive this honor.
Dr. Sze has made fundamental and pioneering contributions to semiconductor devices. After receiving his Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Stanford University in 1963, he worked for Bell Laboratories, where he discovered the floating-gate memory (FGM) effect. This discovery has subsequently given rise to a variety of memory devices and continues to play an important role in the invention and development of different contemporary electronic products and innovative technologies. Dr. Sze has won numerous awards. Besides serving as a member of the National Engineering Academy in the United States, foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and laureate of the Industrial Technology Research Institute, he was also elected as an academician of Academia Sinica in 1994.
