Current biological and biomedical studies mostly focus on “A => B => C” type of linear pathways, which only showed the regulatory relationships between different components in the complex biological phenomenon, but does not explain how such regulatory circuits lead to the behavior or emergent properties of biological systems. These system properties emerged from time- and space-dependent interactions among signaling molecules are intimately associated with biological functions and evolution. We hope to introduce the concepts and realistic examples of system behavior, so that basic and clinical researchers can explore their own research from the dynamics viewpoint. In addition, we often treat our object of study as homogeneous, but many new analytic tools can now analyze single cells and have found heterogeneity in many properties. People carrying the same mutations can have drastically different disease onset and severity. Heterogeneity is important in tumor drug resistance, pathogen drug resistance, genetic diagnosis of diseases, clinical test for drugs. We will apply quantitative analysis to demonstrate how to detect heterogeneity, how does heterogeneity occur, and how to deal with heterogeneity. This course will have four parts: introduction of basic concepts, examples of research by local scientists, hands-on workshops (bring your own laptop), and discussion on practical problems in research. Each student should prepare one poster to introduce your own research to facilitate interactions and discussions. Please bring your own research problems to the discussion session each night, so the group can discuss how to use systems biology concepts and analysis to help solving your problem. Because the hands-on workshop will involve using Matlab or Methmatica, we will have an optional pre-course to familiarize student with these softwares.
