Dr. Gong was a renowned linguist specializing in comparative research on Archaic Chinese, Tangut and Sino-Tibetan. He was awarded five times the Outstanding Research Award of the National Science Council. In 2001, he was elected as Honorary Member of the Linguistic Society of America. In 2002, he was elected as Academician of Academia Sinica.
Dr. Gong was born on December 10, 1934. He graduated from the Department of English at National Taiwan Normal University in 1958 and earned his Ph.D. from the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich in 1974. After returning to Taiwan in 1976, he engaged in research at Academia Sinica for most of his career. He was an Associate Research Fellow and Research Fellow of the Institute of History and Philology and later a Research Fellow and Adjunct Research Fellow of the Institute of Linguistics at Academia Sinica.
