Academician Bei-Tse Chao Passes Away at Age 94
 

Academician Bei-Tse Chao of the Division of Mathematics and Physical Sciences passed away in the United States on March 3, 2011 at age 94. Dr. Chao was born in 1917. In 1939 he graduated from the Electrical Engineering Department in Shanghai Jiao Tong University with a B.Sc. Degree. In 1947, he received his Ph.D. degree from the University of Manchester in England. Dr. Chao began his research and teaching in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1948, and became full professor in 1955 and head of the department in 1975. He retired as Professor Emeritus in 1987.

        As a renowned expert in the field of mechanical engineering, Dr. Chao made pioneering contributions to heat transfer research. He was the recipient of over 10 awards and honors. In 1981, Dr. Chao was elected as member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering. He was elected as Academician of Academia Sinica in 1986.
