Madam Gro Harlem Brundtland, a world-renowned pioneer in sustainable development, served as the Prime Minister of the Kingdom of Norway and the Director-General of the World Health Organization (WHO). Her great contributions in sustainable development are widely recognized by the world. Among her numerous achievements, presenting the Brundtland Report on sustainable development in 1987 was the landmark. Trained as a medical doctor as well as a M.P.H., Madam Brundtland’s big heart is not limited to public health; it extended into the concept of a sustainable society – focusing environment and human development issues. Her grand vision on sustainable development best goes “[Sustainable development is] meeting the demands of the present generations while preserving the rights of future generations to meet their own needs.” Over the decades, she has traveled around the globe. Madam Brundtland is one of the most active leading voices on the criticality of developing a sustainable human society. Academia Sinica jointly with National Cheng Kung University, Ministry of Science and Technology, Executive Yuan, and Tang Prize Foundation are pleased to announce “Public Health and the Environment in a Sustainable Society” Special Forum. We have the honor inviting Madam Brundtland as our special panelist to share her insights on sustainable society. Our distinguished panelists include Academician Shaw Chen Liu, Academia Sinica; President Huey-Jen Jenny Su, National Cheng Kung University; and Dean Chang Chuan Chan, College of Public Health, National Taiwan University.
